The Cable Car Escape & Meeting Kessler – The Old Blood Chapter 4: Escape! Walkthrough

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood Gameplay Chapter 4: Escape! Walkthrough 4K 60FPS

Chapter 4: Escape! is the big turning point in the first act of Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, called Rudi Jäger and the Den of Wolves. After losing his friend Richard Wesley (Agent One), B.J. Blazkowicz has to fight his way out of Castle Wolfenstein and reach the valley below. This chapter takes you from the tight, old stone halls of the Nazi castle to the wider and more dangerous village of Paderborn. Your main goal is to meet up with the local resistance, especially Ludwig Kessler, who knows how to find the secret coordinates for Deathshead’s compound hidden in a Nazi folder.

This chapter puts a lot of pressure on B.J., throwing him into one tough situation after another, from broken cable cars to flooded dig sites. It’s also where he finally faces off with Rudi Jäger, wrapping up their personal conflict. Besides the main story, you can find the Escape! Nightmare Floor 5, a hidden retro level that shows more about B.J.’s mind and the game’s history. By the end, the story shifts from a tense escape to chasing Helga von Schabbs, setting up the next part of the game’s dark mysteries.

High-Altitude Infiltration and the Cableway Breakout

The mission starts with B.J. arriving at the upper cableway station, an important spot for the castle’s transport. To get down to the village, he needs to sneak into the guarded control room, override security, and open the main gates. After that, he boards a large cable car, hoping to escape quickly. But the Nazis cut the power, leaving B.J. hanging over a dangerous drop. Now, you have to use B.J.’s pipes to zip-line across the cables and climb to a nearby maintenance outpost.

At the maintenance outpost, B.J. faces a tough fight against Nazi soldiers, including a powerful Super Soldier guarding the power systems. He has to use all his weapons to clear the area and get the electricity back on. Once the power is restored, he restarts the cable car and continues down the mountain. This part shows how resourceful B.J. needs to be and how much pressure the Nazis put on him. But as soon as he’s back on solid ground, the escape is interrupted by more Nazi attacks.

Deep Below the Surface: The Fall and the Ancient Caverns

As the cable car gets close to the bridge, a Nazi drone attacks and cuts the main cables, sending the car crashing into the cold river below. B.J. survives the crash but ends up trapped in dark, flooded caves under the bridge. These tunnels are actually archaeological dig sites where the SS is searching for something. B.J. has to make his way through these wet, old tunnels, fighting patrols and learning more about what the Nazis are looking for.

As B.J. moves through the flooded dig sites, he finds artifacts and clues that show the Nazis are after something much older than just military secrets. The caves feel tense and creepy, which is a big change from the earlier action scenes. Eventually, B.J. finds an industrial elevator used by the dig teams and rides it up to the surface on the other side of the bridge. Now he’s on the edge of Paderborn, closer to meeting his contact and moving forward with the resistance’s plan.

Seeking Refuge at Kessler’s Tavern in Paderborn

When B.J. enters Paderborn, he has to be careful as he looks for the secret safehouse used by the Kreisau Circle. He heads to Kessler’s Tavern, which looks like a normal bar but is actually the base for the local resistance. Inside, B.J. meets Ludwig Kessler and his ward, Annette Krause. The tavern feels tense but determined as Kessler explains what’s happening with Helga von Schabbs. Kessler says Helga has already left for Wulfburg, taking the important folder with her to lead a big dig at an old church she thinks holds powerful secrets.

This meeting helps B.J. figure out his next steps, but the break doesn’t last long. Kessler and Annette show the real risks of living under Nazi rule, and helping B.J. puts them in danger. As they talk about how to follow Helga to Wulfburg, it’s clear the village is being watched closely. The tavern gives players a chance to explore and learn more about the characters before the enemy shows up. There’s also a hidden secret in the tavern for players who pay attention, offering a short break from the harshness of the war.

The Final Confrontation: The Rudi Jäger Boss Fight

The tavern’s safety is destroyed when Nazi forces find the resistance and attack. Kessler and Annette hide in the basement, while B.J. stays to fight off waves of soldiers. The fight reaches its peak when Rudi Jäger shows up, still alive and looking for revenge. He’s wearing a huge, experimental suit of powered armor called the Kampf-Mech. Jäger blames B.J. for the death of his dog, Greta, making this battle very personal and intense.

To beat Jäger and his Kampf-Mech, B.J. has to aim for the energy cores on the suit’s back and shoulders. The armor is almost impossible to break from the front, so you need to use the tavern’s layout to get behind the mech and shoot the glowing power cells. As you destroy the cores, the armor falls apart, and Jäger becomes vulnerable. B.J. finishes him off, ending the threat. But the victory is short-lived, as the suit’s damaged power system causes a huge explosion. B.J. has to dive into the basement just before the building blows up.

Escaping Paderborn and the Journey to Wulfburg

After the explosion, Kessler’s Tavern is destroyed and Paderborn is on high alert. B.J. comes out of the basement and finds Kessler and Annette alive, but they all know they have to leave right away. They hurry to the docks behind the burned tavern to escape. Kessler tells B.J. that the only way to stop Helga von Schabbs is to follow her to Wulfburg. The group moves quickly through the town, avoiding Nazi patrols searching for anyone who survived the blast.

The chapter ends with B.J., Kessler, and Annette getting on a small boat and quietly heading downriver. This marks the end of Part I: Rudi Jäger and the Den of Wolves, and sets up Part II: The Dark Secrets of Helga Von Schabbs. As they leave the burning village, the story shifts from the castle’s mechanical dangers to older, more mysterious threats. B.J. now knows where to go next, but Wulfburg holds even bigger dangers than Castle Wolfenstein. The escape is over, but the real fight for the secret coordinates is just starting.
