After surviving the wilds of the Commonwealth and fending off a pack of vicious wild mongrels along the way, we finally arrived at the heavily fortified gates of Diamond City. Here, we witnessed a tense standoff and met the intrepid reporter Piper Wright, who smartly tricked the mayor into letting us both inside the “Great Green Jewel.”
Exploring this bustling baseball stadium-turned-city is a major milestone in any Fallout 4 gameplay guide, but our primary search intent was always finding Shaun. Following the main questline, I headed straight to the Valentine Detective Agency in the market, where an assistant named Ellie Perkins frantically informed me that her boss, Nick Valentine, had gone missing while working a dangerous case.

Exploring Park Street Station and Uncovering Vault 114
Ellie’s tip led me to Park Street Station, a ruined subway hub right next to the Boston Common that had been completely taken over by mobsters known as Triggermen. Navigating the dark, winding subway tunnels required some careful gunplay to eliminate the gangsters and safely make my way down to the hidden construction site of Vault 114.
Blasting my way through the vault door, I descended into the retro-futuristic underground bunker to search the corridors for the missing detective. This dungeon is packed with valuable loot and sharply dressed mobsters, making it an excellent location to farm early-game ammunition and experience points before the final rescue.
Lore Fact: Vault 114 was a Vault-Tec social experiment designed to house Boston’s wealthiest politicians and elite, only to force them into cramped, squalid living conditions governed by an Overseer intentionally selected for their strong anti-authority bias.

Rescuing Nick Valentine and Confronting Skinny Malone
Deep inside the overseer’s office of Vault 114, I finally found Nick Valentine, who surprisingly turned out to be a prototype synthetic detective. We fought our way back through the facility together, eventually running into the Triggermen boss, Skinny Malone, along with his bat-wielding girlfriend, Darla, and his heavily armed bodyguards.
While it is possible to use high charisma to talk your way out of this tense standoff, I opted for a more direct approach, killing Skinny Malone and his entire crew in a chaotic, close-quarters firefight. With the threat neutralized, we exited the vault back into the Commonwealth air, where Nick instructed me to meet him back at his office in Diamond City to formally discuss my case.

Investigating Kellogg’s House and Tracking the Scent
Back in the Diamond City market, I sat down with Nick to recount the tragic story of my spouse’s murder and Shaun’s kidnapping inside Vault 111. Nick immediately recognized the description of the scarred mercenary as Conrad Kellogg, a ruthless Institute gun-for-hire who conveniently owned a house right there in the upper stands of the city.
We quickly broke into Kellogg’s heavily locked home, discovering a hidden panic room containing his favorite brand of San Francisco Sunlights cigars. Using these clues, I called upon the best tracking companion in the game, Dogmeat, letting the hound catch the scent of the cigars to lead us on a cross-country pursuit to find the man who ruined our lives.
Lore Fact: Conrad Kellogg is actually over a century old by the time you meet him in Fallout 4; his life was artificially extended by advanced cybernetic implants provided by the secretive Institute to keep their top surface operative in peak physical condition.

Assaulting Fort Hagen and Securing the Fat Man
Dogmeat’s incredible tracking skills led us on a long, dangerous journey following discarded cigars and bloody rags all the way to Fort Hagen on the western edge of the map. Breaking into the multi-level military fortress, I was immediately swarmed by an army of Institute Synths that Kellogg had stationed as his personal security force.
Carefully clearing the building room by room, I managed to stumble upon the Fort Hagen armory, where I scored a devastating Fat Man mini-nuke launcher. Equipped with heavy firepower, I finally confronted Kellogg in the underground command center, engaging in a brutal boss fight that ended with me killing him and looting his unique pistol and cybernetic brain enhancer.

The Brotherhood of Steel Arrival and Reporting Back
After defeating Kellogg and accessing his personal terminal for vital clues about how to access the Institute, I rode the elevator up to the roof of Fort Hagen and opened the door to a breathtaking cinematic event. A massive, heavily armored Brotherhood of Steel airship known as The Prydwen soared directly overhead, announcing their official invasion of the Commonwealth as Vertibirds swarmed the skies.
Tuning my Pip-Boy to the military frequency AF95 triggered the Brotherhood broadcast, drastically shifting the balance of power in the wasteland. With this incredible sight burned into my memory, I fast-traveled back to the Diamond City market to report my findings to Nick Valentine, effectively bringing this monumental episode to a close.
Lore Fact: The Prydwen is a 40,000-ton armored airship constructed by the Brotherhood of Steel at the Adams Air Force Base from the scrapped remains of the Enclave’s mobile crawler platform following the events of Fallout 3.
