Chapter 8: Tug of War – Majima’s Descent and the Empty Lot Conflict
Chapter 8: Tug of War marks a turning point for Goro Majima and the fight over the Empty Lot. Majima shifts from disciplined cabaret manager to fugitive in a yakuza war. The discovery of a decoy body in the Sotenbori canal—a ploy by Omi Alliance’s Kijin Clan boss Homare Nishitani—kicks off the chapter. Nishitani’s love for battle peaks in a Grand Cabaret boss fight, ending with his removal by police and drawing Majima deeper into the Omi underworld.
The chapter peaks when Tsukasa Sagawa confronts Majima, revealing knowledge of his betrayal involving Makoto Makimura. This ends Majima’s ‘civilian’ role and forces him to defend himself during an Omi Alliance ambush at the warehouse. He must then escort the blind Makoto through Sotenbori, testing his determination. The tragedy at Hogushi Kaikan—Wen Hai Lee’s death by car bomb—hits hard. With Lee gone, Majima loses his only ally and faces Masaru Sera and the Nikkyo Consortium alone.
From an analytical perspective, Chapter 8 is crucial for understanding Majima’s arc toward the ‘Mad Dog of Shimano.’ Losing Lee and Makoto’s abduction by Sera mark the collapse of Majima’s adherence to traditional yakuza rules. The chapter broadens the conflict into a three-way struggle—Dojima Family, Omi Alliance, and Nikkyo Consortium—reshaping the Sotenbori underworld’s power dynamics.
