Chapter 4: An Encounter – Majima Is Everywhere
Chapter 4: An Encounter marks the beginning of the main conflict in Yakuza Kiwami, moving the story from the prologue’s aftermath to the search for the missing 10 billion yen. After escaping the turmoil at Chairman Sera’s funeral, Kazuma Kiryu teams up with Detective Makoto Date. While Date is after the stolen Tojo Clan money, Kiryu is searching for Yumi. Their partnership is influenced by Date’s loss in the Dojima murder case, which imbues the story with a feeling of redemption.
Kiryu’s search for Yumi leads him to the Serena bar and then to Bacchus, where the story takes a darker turn. The events at Bacchus introduce Haruka, a little girl looking for her mother, Mizuki, and her aunt, Yumi. This meeting is important because Haruka has a mysterious locket linked to the 10 billion yen. The chapter also develops the characters through a subplot with a stray puppy, which helps build the bond between Kiryu and Haruka before the story shifts back to the main conflict.
Kiryu’s investigation brings him to Ares, a penthouse bar in the Millennium Tower. The conflict escalates when the Omi Alliance shows up. Hiroshi Hayashi, a high-ranking Omi officer, is the boss fight for this chapter. This battle reveals that the rival Osaka syndicate is after Haruka and the locket to track down the stolen money. Hayashi’s challenging fighting style makes players use the environment and move carefully during the fight.
The Kiwami-only flashback gives more insight into why Akira Nishikiyama becomes a villain. It reveals that his sister Yuko is terminally ill and needs 30 million yen for a heart transplant, which explains his increasing desperation and anger. By showing Nishikiyama’s struggles alongside Kiryu’s growing reputation, Chapter 4 explores the tragedy and betrayal that lead to the Tojo Clan’s downfall.
