Yakuza Kiwami Chapter 7: The Dragon and the Koi

Yakuza Kiwami Chapter 7: The Dragon and the Koi – A Brotherhood Officially Broken

Chapter 7 of Yakuza Kiwami, “The Dragon and the Koi,” marks the moment when Kazuma Kiryu and Akira Nishikiyama go their separate ways, both in what they believe and how they act. In this chapter, Nishikiyama’s mental state gets worse as Futoshi Shimano manipulates him. Shimano convinces Nishikiyama that Shintaro Kazama betrayed him to help Kiryu regain power, feeding Nishikiyama’s doubts and turning him into a real enemy.
The chapter also introduces an important theme through the master tattoo artist, Utabori II. While investigating a fake floral tattoo found on a body in Tokyo Bay, Utabori explains the game’s main metaphor: the koi swimming up a waterfall to become a dragon. This image shapes the rivalry, showing Nishikiyama’s violent actions as his attempt to surpass the “Dragon of Dojima.” The scene also reveals that the body from the bay is not Mizuki, keeping the mystery around Haruka’s family and the missing 10 billion yen alive.

Tension builds in Kamurocho as Haruka runs away after learning what happened to her mother. This section highlights Haruka’s growing importance, especially when she uses her gambling skills in a hidden den after a fight with the Snake Flower Triad and MIA agents. The story reaches its peak at Serena, where Kiryu and Nishikiyama’s brotherly bond is finally broken. Nishikiyama confesses to his crimes, including killing Sohei Dojima and trying to kill Kazama, showing he has completely become a villain.

The chapter ends with a tense fight against Koji Shindo, captain of the Nishikiyama Family. The battle at Serena shows that a war has begun within the Tojo Clan. Kiryu’s victory over Shindo’s men proves that there is no chance for peace. Now, the “Dragon” and the “Koi” are complete opposites, set to battle for the future of the Yakuza.
