Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut Chapter 3: A Gilded Cage

Chapter 3: A Gilded Cage – Goro Majima’s Intro

In the Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut, Chapter 3: ‘A Gilded Cage’ marks a critical narrative shift. The setting moves from Kamurocho to Sotenbori, Osaka. This chapter offers a comprehensive character study of Goro Majima and introduces him as the ‘Lord of the Night.’ Instead of his established ‘Mad Dog’ persona, Majima appears as the disciplined manager of The Grand. He uses psychological tactics and elite hospitality to maintain order. His sophisticated handling of a high-profile problem customer demonstrates this approach.
Chapter 3 explores Majima’s position as a disgraced Yakuza in exile after the 1985 Ueno Seiwa incident. He remains under the supervision of Tsukasa Sagawa, a patriarch of the Sagawa Family. The ‘Gilded Cage’ metaphor becomes literal through Majima’s struggle for reinstatement into the Tojo Clan. Sagawa blocks his return and demands a 500-million-yen revenue target. This pressure forces Majima to show his strategic intellect. During his scouting mission at the rival club Odyssey, he engages in a high-stakes battle of wits with the manager, Yamagata.
Gameplay-wise, Chapter 3 expands Majima’s combat abilities. By interacting with masters Sometaro Komeki and Fei Hu at the Dragon & Tiger, players unlock both the tactical Thug Style and the high-damage Slugger Style. These combat systems mark Majima’s transition from a blunt instrument to a versatile strategist. The chapter ends with a pivotal escalation. After dispatching a street thug who ambushed him at his apartment, Majima is confronted by Sagawa. The financial requirement for his return is waived for a contract killing. The revelation of the target, Makoto Makimura, provides a definitive cliffhanger. This moment marks Majima’s first steps back into the violent Yakuza underworld.
