We start episode 9 by heading straight into the Far Harbor DLC and finally entering Acadia. Our main goal is to find Kasumi Nakano and learn why she left the Commonwealth, but it quickly becomes clear that Acadia hides much more than a missing person. The island’s political tension is intense, and our investigation triggers a series of events that push us toward the Children of Atom’s radioactive base. The chapter’s environmental storytelling, along with foggy combat, keeps the experience immersive from beginning to end.

Meeting DiMA and Kasumi in Acadia
When we enter the huge observatory, DiMA greets us right away. He’s a prototype synth who created Acadia as a refuge for other synths. His worn, heavily modified body stands out, with exposed wires and makeshift repairs. DiMA seems friendly, but his questions about our memories make us suspicious. After talking with him, we go downstairs and find Kasumi Nakano working in the mechanical bays.
Kasumi is safe, but she’s determined to find out what DiMA is really hiding. She thinks the leaders of Acadia are lying to the synths and asks us to investigate the restricted parts of the facility. The story slows down here, letting us take in the tense and cramped feeling of the underground sanctuary as we agree to help her look into the people who gave her shelter.
- Lore Fact: DiMA is a rare prototype synth from the same generation as Nick Valentine. Nick got the full personality and memories of a pre-war detective, but DiMA developed his own mind from the ground up. He ended up modifying his body extensively and storing extra memories on external drives.

The Faraday’s Program
To check if Kasumi’s suspicions are true, we sneak down to the lowest level of Acadia and listen in on a secret meeting between DiMA, his scientist Faraday, and the Courser Chase. Hiding in the shadows, we hear them talk about DiMA’s oldest and most dangerous memories, which are hidden in the Children of Atom’s secure base. If the cult unlocks those memories, it could be a disaster for everyone on the island.
We realize we need proof to challenge the leaders, so we break into a restricted terminal and grab a copy of Faraday’s Program on a holotape. With this important software, we confront DiMA about his secrets. He has no choice but to send us on a risky mission: infiltrate the Children of Atom, earn their trust, and use Faraday’s code to recover his memories before the zealots ruin everything.

Trek to The Nucleus
We leave Acadia and prepare for a tough journey across the island to the Children of Atom’s base. The radioactive fog in the pine forests makes it hard to see and hides dangerous predators. On the way, we have to clear out Pine Crest Cavern, a Trapper hideout in the mountains. After breaking through the barricades, we fight the scavengers up close and collect their ammo.
After leaving the cavern, things get even tougher as we cross the radioactive swamps. Here, we run into Anglers for the first time. They jump out of the water and spit toxic fireballs, so we have to use strong weapons to survive. Making it through this challenge, we finally reach the guarded entrance of The Nucleus.
- Lore Fact: Anglers are huge, amphibious creatures from Far Harbor that have mutated to live in the radioactive fog. They hide in shallow ponds and use the glowing part on their heads to look just like the lure weed plant, which helps them ambush people who aren’t paying attention.

Grand Zealot Richter’s Test of Faith
When we reach the gates of The Nucleus, we have to stop. Grand Zealot Richter, a strict and tough commander, guards the entrance to the cult’s base. We ask to see their leader, the High Confessor, but Richter refuses. The Children of Atom don’t trust outsiders, so we have to prove our loyalty before we can go inside.
Richter gives us a deadly initiation called the “Visions in the Fog” quest. He tells us to go deep into the most radioactive part of the island, find Atom’s Spring, and drink from it. It’s a harsh test meant to separate the strong from the weak. Those who survive are seen as worthy by Atom, while the rest are left behind.
- Lore Fact: The Nucleus is built entirely inside the remnants of the USS Democracy, a heavily armed pre-war nuclear submarine base. The facility was originally discovered by DiMA, who later gifted it to the Children of Atom to establish a fragile peace, a decision that severely backfired when a more militant High Confessor took power.

The Mother of the Fog and the Shrine
We make our way through swamps full of Gulpers and finally reach Atom’s Spring. We drink the glowing, toxic water without waiting. Right away, our vision turns blurry and green as the radiation hits us. In this strange state, we see the Mother of the Fog appear above the water. She gestures for us to follow her deeper into the wild, guiding us safely past calm creatures to an old, broken-down building.
The ghostly figure takes us to an abandoned Children of Atom Shrine that’s full of feral ghouls. We clear out the ghouls, break into the shrine, and get the Mother Icon by cracking the terminal password. When we return to The Nucleus with the idol, Richter is shocked that we survived. He recognizes our effort and finally lets us into the submarine base, setting us up for our meeting with the High Confessor.
