The Fall of the Dragon: 1995
The story begins in 1995 with Kazuma Kiryu, a rising lieutenant in the Dojima Family, part of the powerful Tojo Clan. Kiryu is about to earn his own family, a big honor in the yakuza world. But everything changes in Chapter 1: Fate of a Kinslayer, when tragedy strikes the Dojima Family on a rainy night.
Akira Nishikiyama, Kiryu’s sworn brother and best friend, faces a crisis when their childhood friend Yumi Sawamura is attacked by their boss, Sohei Dojima. To protect Yumi, Nishikiyama kills Dojima. In yakuza society, killing your boss is unforgivable. Kiryu knows Nishikiyama needs to care for his sick sister, so he takes the blame for the murder to protect his friend.
Kiryu’s decision to sacrifice himself shapes who he becomes in the series. Kiryu spends ten years in prison, leaving behind Yumi, Nishikiyama, and his old life. This highlights the strong bond between the three friends, a bond that will be tested in time.
A Changed World: 2005
In Chapter 2: Ten Years Gone, Kiryu is released on parole into a different world. Kamurocho looks different, but the biggest changes are in the people he cares about. Nishikiyama becomes a cold, ruthless leader, nothing like the friend Kiryu remembers while Yumi has disappeared without a trace.
The criminal underworld is in chaos. In Chapter 3: Funeral of Fists, the Tojo Clan is falling apart. Their leader, Masaru Sera, has been killed, creating a power struggle. On top of that, 10 billion yen has been stolen from the clan’s vaults, making the theft the main mystery that pulls everyone into a fight for power and money.

The Girl and the Billions
During this chaos, Kiryu meets a young girl named Haruka in Chapter 4: An Encounter. Haruka is alone in Kamurocho, searching for her mother, Mizuki, who is Yumi’s sister. Kiryu, guided by his sense of honor and humanity, key themes in Chapter 11: Honor and Humanity, decides to protect Haruka.
As they move through the dangerous streets of Kamurocho in Chapter 5: Purgatory and Chapter 6: Father and Child, a big secret is revealed: Haruka is not just a lost child; she is the key to finding the missing 10 billion yen. The growing bond between Kiryu and Haruka becomes the emotional center of the game, standing against the violence around them. Kiryu takes on a fatherly role, protecting her from those after her.
The Conspiracy Revealed
in Chapter 7: The Dragon and the Koi and Chapter 8: The Scheme, as the differences between Kiryu (The Dragon) and Nishikiyama (The Koi) become central. Kiryu fights to protect, while Nishikiyama fights for control. In Chapter 9: The Rescue, the plot reveals a huge conspiracy that goes far beyond yakuza rivalries.
The main villain is Kyohei Jingu, a politician who once had a relationship with Yumi. Records show that Jingu is Haruka’s real father. He left Yumi in the past to focus on his career.
In Chapter 10: Shape of Love, the story hits its most emotional moment. Jingu’s ruthless ambition is clear. He sees Yumi and Haruka as threats, not family. He orders them killed to save himself. It is revealed that Shintaro Kazama, Kiryu’s mentor and father figure, helped Yumi and Haruka.

The Millennium Tower Showdown
Everything comes together in the last chapters, 12: Reunited and 13: The End of Battle (Finale). The final showdown happens at the top of the Millennium Tower, a symbol of Kamurocho’s wealth and corruption. Kiryu faces Jingu, but his toughest challenge is his sworn brother, Nishikiyama.
Nishikiyama is driven by feelings of inferiority and a need to surpass Kiryu, which becomes the final obstacle. Their fight is emotional and intense, a clash of ideals between two men who were once like family. After the fight Nishkiyama decides to pull the plug himself, and the 10 billion yen explodes, scattering over the streets of Kamurocho like confetti. This symbolizes a cleansing of the greed that broke the clan apart.
Nishikiyama redeems himself by stopping Jingu and making sure the stolen money is destroyed, paying the ultimate price in the process. Kiryu loses both Nishikiyama and Yumi, He decides to leave the yakuza and raise Haruka as his daughter.
